MENDRISIO, Switzerland—For nearly three decades, Christoph Wild has worked in this remote corner of Switzerland, at a facility hidden behind a phalanx of security cameras and razor wire.
Recently, Mr. Wild, the co-chief executive of gold refiner Argor-Heraeus SA, has had to get used to an unsettling new part of the job: public scrutiny.
After years of global focus on Switzerland’s banks as facilitators of wrongdoing, the country’s gold refiners have increasingly been targeted with similar allegations.
“First the banks were the bad guys, now it’s the precious metals industry,” Mr. Wild said in an interview at his office in Mendrisio.
There are about 10 significant gold refiners in the world, experts say. Four, including Argor, are in Switzerland. They form a critical link between sellers and buyers in the global precious-metals trade, between mines and scrap dealers on the one hand, and acquirers of bullion bars and watch parts on the other.
A report published earlier this month by the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force, which sets standards for combating money laundering, flagged related risks associated with Switzerland’s gold trade. FATF assessors “wonder how well” those risks “are understood by the sector,” the report stated.
Due to its refining industry, Switzerland imports gold in quantities nearly equal to the amount officially taken from the earth in any given year. Last year, Switzerland imported the equivalent of 81% of the world’s gold production from mines, according to publicly available data.
Argor’s Mr. Wild said the countries where Argor imports gold often don’t have adequate rules to prevent illicit mining or transactions, and the firm relies on its own scrutiny of foreign suppliers.
According to a decision Swiss federal prosecutors issued last year, gold looted in the Democratic Republic of Congo to fund armed conflict was refined by Argor roughly a decade ago. Argor “provided assistance” to war crimes, the decision found, albeit unwittingly, and the company was cleared of wrongdoing.
The FATF says gold has long been attractive to criminals as an “anonymous, transformable and easily exchangeable asset.” In 2013, two men pleaded guilty in Hong Kong District Court to selling 181 bars of gold to the local subsidiary of Swiss refiner Metalor as part of an extensive money-laundering operation, according to a court document. Metalor wasn’t accused of wrongdoing.
Metalor said in a response last year that it works only with partners that “abide by strict rules in terms of anti-money laundering.” PAMP Chief Executive Nadia Haroun said the refiner conducted an internal probe of the allegation, which was “unfounded.”
Christoph Wiedmer, co-director of the Society for Threatened Peoples, said he stands by the group’s claim.
Public Eye, a Swiss nongovernmental organization, said in a report last year that Valcambi refined gold mined by child laborers in Burkina Faso. Valcambi responded that the allegation appeared to be unsubstantiated, though it would investigate internally. Valcambi Chief Executive Michael Mesaric didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Argor’s Mr. Wild said the industry is adapting to greater public attention. It is also trying to become more transparent, he said. “We want to be the good guys,” Mr. Wild said.

I've said the war on cash leads to a war on gold. Here it comes. @WSJ reports legal assault on Swiss gold refiners:
Jim, won't this effectively lower physical supply?
El responde:
Yes. If the "illegal"channels are blocked, there's less in the "legal" channels for gold leasing, etc.
(el termino illegal esta entrecomillado....)
